ChewSPITbacca asked:

I have a 750 with three large goldfish. It has a stream connected to it and a gravel bottom. But its always been green for the past year and a half because I don’t have a good filter. What would be a good for a pond like this that wouldn’t cost too much?

….the filter needs some mechanical assistance, pre-straining the water with some course material for aquatic use, but the material looks alot like the fiber in an a/c filter, or ya’ might say it looks like thin fiberglass batting, but definetly different…..anyway a pre-filter straining will remove a large amount of algae and with some additional scrubbing by you in those areas that seem to be most heavily grown with algae will loosen it up and it will get strained by the pre-filter….and for a while you need to pull that material frequently and shake it out to keep it flowing through….
….what power water pump do you use, how many gallons per hour are moving through?
…many high-dollar ponds use a fancy schmancy strainer with a nice plumbing system that leads to a 2-canister system…..that type will have a 800-850 gallon operating system, based upon your current 750 gallons plus the water in each canister and lines….
….if you are in the sun, and have low cycling times, algae will favor the sunlight and low oxygen areas…it is an anerobic plant
….you might consider adding another pump, like order one from Harbor Freights….they have a nice selection of real inexpensive fountain type pumps that sit in the water, and you attach a 5/8 hose to the discharge and send that to the filter…the strainer material would be wrapped around the intake of those pumps….those pumps do come with 15′ electric cords and could be place in 3 or 4 locations around the pond and stream to ensure every place has some better circulation…..the filter then only needs to receive the pre-strained water, that filters again through a strainer mesh, that houses bacteria that oxidizes, ammonia and nitrites, and then gravity flows back into the pond, perhaps via a waterfall…the pumps i refer to are frequently on sale by the HArbor Freight online store for about $6.50 each…….stoke up the straining and circulation…….
