My ornamental grass is bare in the middle so what should I do?
My sweet flag ornamental grass (Acorus gramineus ‘Ogon’), grows well but it gets hollow (or bare) in the middle. The look I’m after is more of a waterfall mound, which is how the plant looked when it was young.
I’m pretty sure the plant can be divided for propagation. But how often should that be done? And will dividing the plant encourage it to get that mounded, waterfall look? The plant is not very old; maybe 3 years.
I know this grass prefers wet, even boggy, areas. I do not grow mine there. It is just part of a perennial garden which gets a lot of sun. Seems to do okay anyhow, since the folliage, which is evergree, always looks health. It just the overall form of the plant I am trying to control. Any advice?

Your thoughts are correct. Ornamental grasses die in the middle when they are ready to be divided which can be as little as three years. You’ll get that waterfall look back and you’ll have a much larger “waterfall”. Agree to share some with friends and family and if they come over and help you lift and divide it. It’s a lot more physical than dividing daylillies or hostas!
