About my no filtration koi pond?

nj asked:
In the meantime my 10000lt koi pond has only a waterfall and I will put up uv filtration next. The water is turning darker green though it still look okay. My question is would a densely woven skimmer help to eradicate the building up algae if I skim the water daily? My pond is exposed now in the the summer sun and I do remove and top up the water at least every 3 days. I also vacuum it at least once a week. I could hardly see my 10 4 inch koi and goldfishes, only when they surface to feed. Any suggestion while I dont have the uv filtration yet? Thanks.

You can probably do without the UV, but for the health of the koi, you must have filtration. Massive filtration. They probably don’t mind the algae that much, but koi are eating machines and therefore excrete huge amounts of waste. The water will be foul and kill your fish.
A skimmer could help a little bit, but not much. You can build a homemade filter that could also help a little bit. Use a large plastic container filled with lava rocks, Put the pump under the rocks and be sure to keep the pump and the rocks separate. Find a mesh bag to put the rocks in. That is not nearly enough filtration tho. You need much more.

Where you see water and sun, you will see algae. A small amount doesn’t hurt anything, there are lots of fish that feed on algae. Skimmers won’t help. Shading your koi pond might. You don’t want to use chemicals to get rid of algae in a fish pond. But that is the only thing that will completely rid the water of algae.
